Columns and Reviews

My opinionated but useful reviews, editorials, and news items have appeared in a number of publications over the past decade. You may have seen my work in Living Blues, Blues Access, Rock & Roll Disc, Hawaiian Boogie Disease, Blues Riffs, The New Memphis Star, Shake, Rattle, and Roll, The Heartland Traveler, or in my current literary home, Memphis Musician. I'm occasionally accused of being a purist music snob, a charge I deny half-heartedly. You can be your own judge by taking a glance at some of the collected columns and reviews posted here.

The W.C. Handy Awards Program

The W.C. Handy Awards, produced by the Blues Foundation, are the rough equivalent of the Grammy's the Country Music Awards, or the Tonys. Each year, the foundation asks noted blues artists, writers, and historians to contribute short pieces on the current "state of the blues" or different aspects of the music and its history. I submitted an article on the growing blues community online that was published in the 1995 program.
